Book Review: An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving by Louisa May Alcott AND Apple Slump Recipe

Today’s Thanksgiving book review is An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving by Louisa May Alcott. Here’s what it’s about:

Thanksgiving morning is here, and the Bassett family’s cozy kitchen is filled with the hustle and bustle of the holiday. But this year something is different: Tilly, Prue, and their brothers and sisters have been left in charge of everything from the roasted turkey to the apple slump. They tie on their aprons and step into the kitchen, but are they really up for the challenge of cooking a Thanksgiving feast?

In this stunning new edition of Louisa May Alcott’s classic holiday tale, James Bernardin’s joyous illustrations bring the spirit of a truly old-fashioned Thanksgiving to vibrant life.

This is a slightly longer story that is beautifully illustrated. I loved the historical and traditional style of the writing. And considering the story was written by Louisa May Alcott, who also wrote one of my all time favorite books, Little Women, I was excited to read the tale. I found it heartwarming, especially when the family came together and were forgiving of the mistakes that the girls made while cooking their first Thanksgiving meal. This is a good one to have in your holiday library.

Louisa May Alcott’s Apple Slump

4 to 6 tart apples (3 cups sliced)
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups flour
              —
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg (well beaten)
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter

1. Pare, core, and slice the apples.
2. Preheat oven to 350. Grease the inside of a 1 1/2 quart baking dish with butter.
3. Put the sliced apples into a dish. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples and stir to mix.
4. Bake the apples uncovered until they are soft, about 20 minutes.
5. While the apples are baking, sift together into a bowl the flour, baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and sugar. Mix into this the beaten egg, milk and melted butter. Stir gently.
6. Spread the mixture over the apples and continue baking until the top is brown and crusty (about 25 minutes).
7. Serve with whipped cream.
