Movie Review: It Follows

ItFollowsHey, I’m back with a bad one, It Follows. Here’s what it’s about:

“A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.”

I happened upon It Follows while browsing for horror movies on cable. There was no rating for the movie, so I took my chances based on the description. I was sadly disappointed and quickly lost interest.

This could have been a good teen scream movie based on the description. Well, not the description on IMDB above, which says nothing about the true plot. Anyway, the idea of the movie is that the characters can pass a curse on to each other by having sex. To get rid of the curse, have sex with the next person you add to the chain. If the person you pass the curse on to dies, the curse comes back to you. Kinda cool idea, huh? Well, the story goes all over the place and the killings as a result of being cursed just fell flat.

Be careful to read a bunch of reviews before you watch this one. It’s rated way higher than it’s worthy. I was bored to death and never scared. Maybe grossed out a few times, but never scared.

Movie Review: Exists

ExistsSorry for taking last week off. It was a crazy week.

This week’s movie is Exists, and I have mixed feelings about this one. Here’s what it’s about:

“For five friends, it was a chance for a summer getaway- a weekend of camping in the Texas Big Thicket. But visions of a carefree vacation are shattered with an accident on a dark and desolate country road. In the wake of the accident, a bloodcurdling force of nature is unleashed-something not exactly human, but not completely animal- an urban legend come to terrifying life…and seeking murderous revenge.”

First off, Exists had some of the most stupidest characters I’ve seen in a movie. I was screaming many four-letter words at the TV screen every few minutes. Very annoying! At least give us one character with half a brain. Still, there was something about their stupidity that kept me watching. I found myself interested to find out what dumb move they’d make next, and of course, they delivered every time.

I have to acknowledge that the acting wasn’t bad and the big foots were cool.

I detested the Blair Witch Project style of filming, and that the character with the camera always seemed to be filming despite the tortures big foots inflicted on him.

If you’re feeling adventurous, give this one a try. Otherwise, don’t bother.

Movie Review: The Revenant

The RevenantThis week I’m reviewing The Revenant, the new release directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Considering what the main character, Hugh Glass, goes through, it is an undead movie of sorts. In case you haven’t heard, here’s what it’s about:

“A frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.”

Hugh Glass’s story of being left for dead after a bear attack is a favorite of mine, so I couldn’t miss this one in the theater. Richard Harris also stared in the version, Man in the Wilderness, back in 1971, and as much as I love Richard Harris, this is a much better movie.

I read that this film had the most challenging film shoots in the history of cinema. While you watch you get that feeling. This film takes you back to the early 1800s and keeps you in the moments of a much rougher existence. The movie was filmed in only natural light, and the darkness of most scenes plays with your emotions. You’ll have a hard time sitting still in your seat at times, especially during the famous bear attack that was most excellent.

I personally think that Tom Hardy as John Fitzgerald was better in his performance than DiCaprio. Hardy, in character shows the worst side of man’s self-centeredness. I do have to give DiCaprio kudos for having so few lines, yet he provokes so much emotion throughout the movie. I’m so glad Hardy, as well as DiCaprio have been nominated for Oscars for their performances. They deserve awards!

Since I like to keep my reviews short and I’m nearing a page, go read ‘The Revenant’: Film review on CNN’s website if you want to know more. It’s a fascinating article on the history of Hugh Glass and the making of the movie.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this movie!! It is one of the darkest HORROR movies I’ve seen in a long time. Yes, as far as I’m concerned and based on the horrible things the characters do, this movie qualifies for the horror genre. See The Reverant in the theater and bring lots of Kleenex too!

Movie Review: Frankenstein’s Army

Frankenstein's_Army_DVD_coverThis is an old review I never posted. I had to stray away from zombies and into re-animation when I saw Frankenstein’s Army on Netflix. Although some would classify these Frankenstein-like characters as zombies, I don’t. Being a traditionalist, I consider zombies voodoo or flesh eating characters, but that’s one girl’s opinion. Anyway, here’s what it’s about:

“Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades — a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.”

Whoever made this movie has a crazy insane imagination. The movie plays as found footage like in Blare Witch Project. Soviet soldiers happen upon a factory in Nazi Germany at the end of WWII. A crazy scientist is creating half human, half left over war machines beings. Every time the camera goes around another corner, some whacked out creation comes at the screen. If anything, go Google this movie and look at the images that come up. You won’t be able to resist watching Frankenstein’s Army. And I’m sure a lot of these characters are showing up at cons.

All I can say is WOW! This movie was awesome!! One of THE BEST horror movies I’ve ever seen!!
